USAID Environmental
Health Project
Manufacturing News Center - Operations firm to assist
with most critical health challenges facing our global population. Global
efforts will improve public health in developing countries.
November 3, 2004-Jobwerx News-The U.S. Agency for International
Development (USAID) has selected a CDM-led team to be one of three consortia
to carry out projects under the 5-year, $250 million environmental health
indefinite quantity contract, a far-reaching technical support contract
to alleviate many of the most critical health challenges facing today's
global population.
The program supports USAID's continued successful work in 12 key areas
of environmental health, with the overall objective of reducing childhood
morbidity and mortality in developing countries by reducing exposure
to agents of disease and to environmental hazards that exacerbate disease.
Priority areas include water supply and sanitation; solid waste management;
vector control; infection control, including medical waste management
and improved hygiene in health facilities; integrated programming of
population-health-environment activities in areas of sensitive biodiversity;
and indoor air pollution.
Throughout the program, CDM and its partners will apply the technical
and program management expertise garnered during the firm's long history
implementing large-scale, flagship projects for USAID, including award-winning
programs such as the 15-year Water and Sanitation for Health Project
and the decade-long Environmental Health Project, completed this year.
"CDM is honored once again to have the opportunity to work with USAID
to support its long-term environmental health initiatives. This award
continues a 25-year tradition of collaborating with USAID on projects
that contribute significantly to improving human health and addressing
environmental health on a global scale," says J. Ellis Turner, CDM senior
vice president.
CDM is a global, full-service consulting, engineering, construction,
and operations firm, employing 3,600 worldwide, helping public and private
clients improve the environment and infrastructure.
CDM was founded as a partnership in 1947 by Thomas R. Camp, Herman G.
Dresser, and Jack E. McKee. Dr. Camp headed the department of sanitary
engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology before leaving the
university to set up a consulting practice. Dedicated to public health
protection, he pioneered water treatment technologies such as dual-media
filters and direct filtration for public water supplies. While Dr. Camp
set the standard of technical excellence for CDM, Mr. Dresser established
the tone and business practices of the firm, emphasizing the importance
of employee development across all disciplines. Dr. McKee made professional
contributions in water quality protection, groundwater recharge, and engineering
education. He left the firm in 1949 to become a professor at the California
Institute of Technology, later rejoining CDM on a part-time basis.
