Zimmer to build polyester plant in Russia

Manufacturing News Center - Expected capacity of 154,000 tons per year

Press Release-November 6, 2004-Jobwerx News-Zimmer AG, a company of the mg technologies ag group, has been awarded a contract for the construction of a polyester plant in the Russian Federation to produce chips for PET bottles. The project, to be located in Dsershinsk near Nishni Novgorod, comprises a continuous four-vessel polycondensation plant and a solid state polycondensation (SSP) both designed for a capacity of 154,000 tons per year. The customer, the Austrian Petro-chemical Holding AG, Vienna, is an international investment group. The contract with an order value of around 40 million Euro has became effective since October 26th, 2004.

Zimmer will provide the technology, engineering, key equipment and will be responsible for the supervision of erection and start-up, which has been scheduled for the first half of 2006. The Frankfurt-based engineering company has previously been awarded a contract in November 2003 and March 2004 by

Petrochemical Holding AG to build two polyester plants with the same capacity each. Both are being built in Klaipeda, Lithuania, will have an annual capacity of 154,000 tons each and they are planned to start operations in the first and second half of 2005.

These projects with a total annual capacity of approximately 465,000 tons will make Petrochemical Holding AG one of east Europe's largest producers of PET bottle grade chips. On October 7th, 2004, Petrochemical Holding AG and Zimmer AG signed a letter of intent to construct a fourth plant in the same region.

The first plant built by Zimmer in Eastern Europe for around 55,000 tons of chips for PET bottles per year, was commissioned in Russia.

DTP process - Preform cooling down system

Direct To Preform (DTP) – a new process developed by Zimmer

Zimmer AG recently started up a new pilot plant for the production of bottle preforms. With the Direct To Preform process, or DTP for short, bottle preforms are generated directly from the melt phase of the polycondensation unit. The plant comprises a polycondensation reactor for high, bottle-grade polymer viscosities (DHI reactor: direct high intrinsic viscosity), a melt distribution system suited for dosing various additives as well as a preform machine supplied by Husky. The feed zone of the machine extruder has been modified to accept PET melt feed rather than the usual granulate. The pilot plant has a capacity of up to 500 kg/day which corresponds to an output of around 12,000 bottle preforms.

Zimmer is a leading engineering, procurement and construction company with a strong focus on process technology operating worldwide in the polymers and synthetic fiber industries. As part of the mg engineering subgroup of mg technologies ag, Zimmer designs, supplies and builds turnkey plants or plant units for the production of polymers and synthetic fibers (polyester, polyamides, polyacrylonitrile, cellulose) including the complete offsites for utility supply.

Zimmer technology portfolio spans the complete lifecycle of polymers, synthetic fibers and thermoplastics from production via further processing through to recycling. Around the globe, plants built by Zimmer generate products as diverse as textile filaments, staple fibers, tyre cord, carpet yarn, engineering plastics, packaging films, bottles and engineering foils and films.

Headquarters are located in Frankfurt, Germany, They have engineered, supplied, built and successfully commissioned over 800 polymer and synthetic fiber production plants in the past 50 years.
