Inquiry for information regarding the cost effectiveness of ISO14001

I am a student at the University of Central Lancs., studying Management and Accounting. In the business Management department there are no modules on EMS., so i Have decided to write my third year dissertation on EMS ISO14001, obviously I have very little knowledge in this area, but i think it should be discussed more in the field of management. I would like my final outcome to be wether or not being acredited to ISO14001 is cost effective, in some cases it would be, i suppose if your already accredited to the 9000 series but what about a small to medium size enterprise looking at it for the first time, some may agree the policy but cant afford the training time or cost. I would be very gratefull of any information you may send me.
