Since 1986 the GEISS company manufactures CNC-controlled, multi-axes portal-type milling machines. In the early eighties when GEISS started to develop a trimming machine for vacuum formed plastic parts, such machines were not yet available on the market. An attempt at trimming three-dimensional curved parts was made by the use of cam-controlled machines and modified handling, welding and painting robots.

The advantages of a CNC controlled continuous path control over a robot control developed for positioning tasks, the advantages of a rigid portal-type construction over an unstable cantilever robot arm and the high flexibility over cam-controlled machines soon helped the GEISS trimming machines on the road to success.

Since 1986 over 300 milling machines have been built and delivered all over the globe. The machines are built with motion paths from 600 to 10,000mm. In addition to thermoplastics, the machines also process glass fibre and carbon fibre reinforced duroplastics including trimming of pressed GMT and SMC parts, trimming of aluminium castings, routing of formed aluminium sheet, trimming of formed components of foam, leather and a substrate in sandwich construction, trimming of wood panelling, formed plywood parts, lightweight honeycomb materials, blow moldings and pattern-making foams such as Ureol for tool making and pattern making.

The GEISS company is the only specialist world-wide to offer complete solutions for plastics processing. The line includes design and manufacture of thermoforming machines, CNC trimming centres, and tool manufacturing and prototyping for vacuum forming.
